Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), also known as ubiquinone (UQ) and coenzyme Q (CoQ), is a coenzyme (small organic non protein molecules) that exists in all eukaryotes that carry out aerobic respiration. Q represents the quinone group, and 10 represents the amount of isoprene attached to its tail. Its structure is similar to vitamin K, vitamin E and plastid quinone.
Coenzyme Q10 is one of the substances involved in the electron transfer chain and aerobic respiration in the mitochondria of eukaryotic cells. It is also the only non protein member in the electron transfer chain. 95% of the energy in the human body will be formed from this. Therefore, more coenzyme Q10 can be found in organs with high energy demand (such as the heart, liver, kidney, etc.)
Ubiquinone molecule contains a side chain composed of several isoprene units and connected to the mother nucleus of p-benzoquinone. The length of the side chain varies according to the source of the Ubiquinone, and generally contains n=6~10 isoprene units. For mammals, n=10, so it is also called coenzyme Q10
