Psyllium psyllium husk powder is a kind of herbal medicine of Ginuceae family, which is native to India and Iran, also known as the seed shell of Plantago rotundifolia (Latin scientific name: Plantago ovata), a kind of artificially planted seed shell of Plantago Plantago of Plantaginaceae family. It is widely used in medicine, health products, food, beverage and feed products because it is rich in soluble dietary fiber and hydrophilic mucilage, coralline, enzyme, fat and cellulose. In 2014, the National Health and Family Planning Commission of China approved the shell of Plantago rotunda as a new food ingredient.

The shell of Plantago rotundifolia is rich in dietary fiber, reaching over 80%, and the ratio of soluble and insoluble dietary fiber is as high as 7:3.Other nutrients mainly include glucosides, proteins, polysaccharides, vitamin B1, and choline.
In traditional Indian medicine, the seeds of Plantago orbiculata are used to treat constipation, diarrhea, hemorrhoids, ulcers, bladder problems, and hypertension. Plantago seeds with round bracts are also commonly used to resist skin irritation, including ivy toxicity and insect bites.
