Angiotensin II is an octapeptide that is a potent but labile vasoconstrictor. It is produced from angiotensin I after the removal of two amino acids at the C-terminal by  angiotensin converting enzyme. The amino acid in position 5 varies in different species. To block vasconstriction and hypertension effect of angiotensin II, patients are often treated with ACE inhibitors or with angiotendin  II Type 1 receptor blockers.
 

Function

This vasoconstrictive effect is essential for maintaining adequate blood flow to vital organs, particularly in conditions such as hypotension.

2. Aldosterone Secretion: Angiotensin II stimulates the release of aldosterone from the adrenal cortex. Aldosterone, in turn, promotes the reabsorption of sodium and water in the kidneys, helping to regulate blood volume and blood pressure.

3. Stimulation of Thirst: Angiotensin II acts on the brain to stimulate thirst, promoting water intake.
