Melanotan ii (MT-ii), also known by its chemical name Ac-Nle-cyclo[Asp-His-D-Phe-Arg-Trp-Lys]-NH2 and CAS number 121062-08-6, is a synthetic analog of the naturally occurring peptide hormone α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It was originally developed as a potential treatment for skin conditions and sexual dysfunction but is more commonly known for its use in tanning.
Melanotan ii works by activating melanocortin receptors (primarily MC1R and MC4R) in the body. These receptors are involved in several physiological processes:
1. Skin Pigmentation:
- By binding to MC1R receptors in melanocytes, Melanotan ii stimulates the production and release of melanin, leading to darker skin pigmentation.
2. Appetite Regulation:
- Melanotan ii may influence appetite and energy balance through its action on melanocortin receptors in the hypothalamus.
